A bold new identity brought to life through collaboration and creativity

When the team at VIP Trade approached MoMac to help with their rebrand, the answer was clear: “Of course we can!”

The brief was simple but significant. VIP Trade wanted to transition from its identity as Dyers Rd ITM to a new, cohesive brand that aligned better with the broader VIP family of businesses. Part of the Caldwell Group, VIP Trade is a well-established provider of quality building supplies, tools, and construction materials in Christchurch, with more than 40 years of industry experience.

The MoMac team was tasked with creating a modern, unified identity that reflected VIP Trade’s heritage while future-proofing its unique brand. The rebrand included creating a new business name, followed by a logo, tagline development, photography, brand guide, website overhaul, and the implementation of a new loyalty program.

The rebranding was a collaboration between six members of the MoMac teams across different departments including web development, photography and graphic design.

MoMac Senior Graphic Designer Brad Russel said the project aimed to create a fresh new look for VIP Trade that would stand out in a competitive market, was user-friendly and appealed to their primary customer base: tradies.

“A rebrand involves a lot of steps. First, we need to understand the ‘why’ and ask the right questions to create a solid brief. Then comes name development, followed by logo research. Once we have some ideas, the concept phase begins, After that, we refine the best concepts, push them as far as we can and present our top picks. Once the logo is confirmed, we create the brand guide and logo suites, which can be rolled out to everything including web digital, print and signage.”

Working on the VIP Trades rebrand was a fulfilling experience for himself and the MoMac team, Brad said.

“I’m proud to see the logo I created out in the wild and how it’s been applied across so many different applications. The ‘VIP’ part is definitely my favourite, but I also love how the pattern I created using the ‘V’ works in the design. It was a really rewarding experience, especially having the time to refine and develop the concepts.”

“As a team, we learned that we could achieve anything we set out to, no brand is too big for us. The key takeaway from this experience is that when the client trusts you and is willing to listen to suggestions, the best outcome is possible for all parties.

“We have an awesome team, that works with passion and always has the client in mind when designing. At MoMac we have got your back.”

Caldwell Group Chief Executive Officer Don Reed said MoMac were the obvious choice for this project.

“MoMac currently manages our group websites and has a good understanding of our business requirements and culture. The working relationship and [MoMac’s] understanding of our business and expectations were key to the success of this venture.

“I gave them one week to come back with concepts and within another week we signed off on the brand. This enabled us to remove the old brand and set up VIP Trade in six weeks. [I am] very pleased with the result and the way they took the lead in turning a concept into a reality.”
